No. 7 Golden Eagles Hang On For Big CCAA Victory

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team kept its conference title hopes alive with a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Cal State East Bay on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles got goals from Oliver Diaz and Carl Solli and held off a late Cal State East Bay charge to beat the Pioneers, 2-1, at Pioneer Stadium. Cal State LA (12-1-3, 6-1-3 CCAA) stretched its winning streak to four games in a row with the victory. The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 7 in the nation, are in sole possession of third place in the conference and just one point back of conference co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State LA has assured itself of a top-three finish and will either earn a first-round bye with a top-two finish or host a first-round tournament game at University Stadium next Sunday.

Diaz opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his fifth goal of the season and Solli gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute with his second goal of the season. Cal State East Bay (4-8-5, 2-5-3 CCAA) made things interesting late in the game and cut the deficit to 2-1 on a free kick goal from Danal Menshikov from just outside the box in the 86th minute. The Pioneers got a corner kicks in the waning seconds, but Cal State LA's defense blocked one shot and a last-gasp attempt was well wide of the target.

Cal State LA had a 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in the first half. Both teams had four corner kicks.

Alvaro Unanua made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Cal State East Bay goalkeeper Kelekolio Mateo, Jr. made five saves for the Pioneers.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring when Diaz knocked in a loose ball after a long kick from James Raptis made its way toward the goal. Raptis picked up his third assist of the season.

The score remained at 1-0 into the second half despite Cal State LA controlling the contest. Solli got an assist from Bryan Ortega in the 60th minute and drilled a beautiful shot just inside the far post for his second goal in four games. Solli has five points in his last four contests. Ortega, meanwhile, picked up his fourth assist of the season.

Cal State East Bay cashed in on a foul deep in Cal State LA territory that led to Menshikov's free kick and goal with less than five minutes to play. Unanua made a save on a shot attempt by Aaron Farnan in the 87th minute and the Golden Eagles successfully defended the late corner kick to preserve the win.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a match at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday.
