Golden Eagles Dealt First CCAA Loss By Warriors

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team entered the latter stages of Friday's big California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Stanislaus State holding onto a lead, but an unfortunate final 15 minutes resulted in the Golden Eagles' first conference loss of the season.

The Golden Eagles allowed two goals in a conference game for the first time this season, the final one on a penalty kick in the 84th minute of a tough 2-1 defeat to the Warriors at Warrior Stadium. Cal State LA (7-3-5, 4-1-4 CCAA) entered the weekend with a share of the CCAA lead, but finds itself in a tie for fourth in the conference with 16 points, three points out of first. Stanislaus State (8-3-4, 5-2-2 CCAA) vaulted past the Golden Eagles and are now tied for second with Chico State, one point ahead of Cal State LA and Cal Poly Pomona. Sonoma State leads the conference with 19 points with two matches remaining.

Cal State LA had the statistical edge and the possession advantage, but still came out on the short end. The Golden Eagles had a 15-8 edge in shots, including a big 9-3 advantage in the first half. Cal State LA also had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Stanislaus State goalkeeper

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Gisell Cruz scored the first goal of her Cal State LA career with assists from Jonnie Sanchez and Skylynn Rodriguez. The play actually started with a booming free kick from Destiny Moedano after a foul in Cal State LA's defensive end. Rodriguez got the ball and sent it to Sanchez, who got it to Cruz alone in front and she fired into the goal. Sanchez and Rodriguez both picked up their first assists this season.

The Golden Eagles held the lead until the 76th minute when Taylor Lucas drilled a perfectly-placed shot from just outside the box to the top corner by the far post to tie it.

Stanislaus State was then awarded a penalty kick in the 83rd minute and Alexis Brewah converted to give her team the lead. It was the first penalty kick of the season surrendered by the Golden Eagles.

Thaiz Hernandez and Rodriguez had three shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Kaelah Basurto had two. Areli Reyes made two saves for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with an important contest at Cal State East Bay.
