LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team completed a successful California Collegiate Athletic Association weekend with an important victory over San Francisco State.
Liliana Gonzalez notched her third goal in two games and lifted the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 win over the Gators on Sunday in University Stadium. Cal State LA (7-2-5, 4-0-4 CCAA) started the day in a four-way tie for first place in the CCAA and finished it in a two-way tie with Sonoma State with three matches remaining. Both first-place squads have 16 points.
Gonzalez, who scored both goals on Friday in a 2-1 win over Sonoma State, was at it again on Sunday. She corralled a loose ball just outside the box in the 66th minute and rifled a blast just inside the far post for a spectacular goal. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season. She also made the defensive play of the game when she headed a ball off the line to prevent a San Francisco State goal in the first half.
Cal State LA's defense took it from there.
Areli Reyes made three saves for the Golden Eagles as Cal State LA recorded its ninth shutout of the season.
Cal State LA had a 13-11 edge in shots, while San Francisco State had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, including four in the second half when the Gators turned up the pressure in an attempt to find the equalizer.
Marcella Salyer made five saves in goal for the Gators (4-7-3, 2-3-2 CCAA).
Gonzalez had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Thaiz Hernandez,
Shelby Melin and
Miyah Coleman had two shots each.
Cal State LA will play its last three conference games on the road, beginning with a match on Friday at Stanislaus State.
