SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team put an exclamation point on a successful weekend with a three-game sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles took control early and never let up in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over the Otters in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State LA (12-4, 7-1 CCAA) is now 10-1 over its last 11 matches. Cal State Monterey Bay (7-8, 3-5 CCAA) posted a five-set win at home over defending conference champion Cal State San Bernardino earlier in the season and was coming off a five-set win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday.
Ayjah Landers had 12 kills and three solo blocks to lead a balanced Cal State LA attack.
Emily Elliott also had 12 kills and hit at a .500 percentage,
Ashley Dittmann had 11 kills and
Iane Henke had 10 kills, two aces and a team-high 15 digs.
Madison Tamayo had 10 kills to lead the Otters.
Jaden Grova had 14 set assists and one ace and
Jameson Sanders had 11 digs.
Cal State LA had a 47-26 advantage in kills and outhit the Otters, .305 - .054. The Golden Eagles also had a 5-4 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had three aces and four service errors, while Cal State Monterey Bay had eight aces and four errors.
The Golden Eagles took a quick 7-1 lead in the opening set behind a strong serving run by Sanders and led the rest of the way. An ace by Grova gave the Golden Eagles an 11-2 lead and the Golden Eagles extended their advantage to 19-8 behind the serving of Elliott. A kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-15 and a kill by Dittmann ended the frame.
The Golden Eagles trailed 13-11 in the second set, but used a 9-0 run to take the lead. A kill by Henke and back-to-back service aces by Henke made it 14-13 and a kill by Dittmann, an attack error, a kill by Elliott, two kills by Dittmann and a bad set made it 20-13. The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-18 after a kill by Landers and a kill by
Haley Roundtree ended the set.
Cal State LA trailed 9-5 early in the third set and was down as late as 18-17 before putting the match away in straight sets. The set was tied at 19-19 before a service error, an attack error and a kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles a 22-19 lead. After the Otters pulled to within 22-20, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Elliott, an attack error and a kill by
Colette Florentin to end the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 5 p.m.
