LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team continued its winning ways Friday with a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The No. 25 Golden Eagles, playing their first match this season as a nationally-ranked team swept past the Toros, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23 on Dig Pink night in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-4, 8-1 CCAA) improved to 12-1 over its last 13 matches.
Iane Henke had 10 kills and 11 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Emily Elliott had nine kills and five blocks.
Shelby Grubbs and
Ayjah Landers had five kills each.
Camila Sanchez-Tellez and Cassie Taylor had six kills each for the Toros (3-13, 1-8 CCAA).
Jaden Grova and
Eliza Cannon had 11 set assists each for the Golden Eagles, while
Haley Roundtree had three kills and a match-high eight blocks.
Cal State LA had a 38-27 advantage in kills and an 11-6 edge in blocks. Cal State LA also hit at a .261 percentage to .089 for the Toros. Cal State LA had eight service aces and seven errors, while Cal State Dominguez Hills had eight aces and 10 errors.
Cal State LA faced an early 5-2 deficit in the opening set, but took command with a 6-0 run that broke an 8-8 tie. The final five points came during a strong serving run by Cannon that included an ace, a block by Grubbs and Henke and kills by Grubbs and Elliott.
The Golden Eagles took a 20-12 lead after a kill by Roundtree and a block by Roundtree and Henke. The Toros pulled to within 21-18, but kills by Henke, Grubbs, Elliott and Henke again closed out the set.
Cal State LA took a quick 12-4 lead in the second set thanks to a 7-0 run that included a pair of aces by
Jameson Sanders, a kill by Roundtree and back-to-back kills from Henke. The Toros pulled to within 17-14, but a 5-0 run restored order for the Golden Eagles. A kill by
Zuhal Cetin started the run and she gave the Golden Eagles a 22-14 lead with an ace.Â
The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-15 after kills by Elliott and Henke and after the Toros fought off three set points, the frame ended with a service error.
The Golden Eagles trailed early in the final set, 5-1, 7-3 and 8-4, but took the lead with an 8-0 run that was sparked by the serving of Henke. Elliott and Roundtree had three blocks during the stretch, Henke had an ace and Elliott and Cetin had kills.
The Toros battled back to tie it at 22-22 and, after the Golden Eagles took a 23-22 lead on a kill by Landers, tied it again at 23-23. The Golden Eagles, though, got a block by Landers and
Colette Florentin and a block from Roundtree and Henke to end the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a match at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m.
