IRVINE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team made an impressive return to action on Saturday night in a 1-1 draw at Concordia.
The Golden Eagles erased a 1-0 deficit thanks to a goal by
Irma Pinzon in the 82nd minute and settled for the tie against a Concordia squad picked to finish second in the PacWest Conference.
Cal State LA enjoyed a 17-6 advantage in shots, including a huge 11-1 edge in the second half. After Concordia scored in the opening two minutes of the second half, the Golden Eagles played in their offensive zone for most of the remainder of the contest. The pressure finally paid off when Pinzon got to a ball in the box and sent a shot into the goal from point-blank range.
Lauren Sanchez got to a loose ball and played it into the box, where
Liliana Gonzalez was able to head it to Pinzon, who one-timed it into the net for the equalizer.
The Golden Eagles had a glorious chance late in regulation when
Thaiz Hernandez sent a dangerous shot toward the goal. With Pinzon right on the doorstep, Concordia goalkeeper Hailey Asato was able to just parry the attempt over the crossbar and out of harm's way.
While Cal State LA kept up the pressure in the overtime periods, Concordia did get a good opportunity in the final five minutes, but a shot by PacWest Preseason Player of the Year Jadenn Carrillo went just high and wide from a sharp angle with Cal State LA defenders on her heels.
Cal State LA ended the match with a 17-6 edge in shots, an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks and made Asato collect eight saves in the match. Concordia was whistled for 18 fouls to just four for the Golden Eagles.
With a large group of talented newcomers, Cal State LA had 21 players who saw action in the game.
Pinzon was a steady threat throughout the game for the Golden Eagles. She was credited with three shots, including the game-tying attempt.
Kimberly Gamez also had three shots, while
Faith Baumgartner and
Shelby Melin had two shots on goal each.
Areli Reyes, in her Cal State LA debut, made one save in goal for the Golden Eagles.
After a scoreless first half, Concordia struck in the first two minutes of the second period to take the lead. Carrillo received a through ball from Carmony Jones, splitting the Cal State LA defense and then hitting a shot inside the far post up high.
That score jolted the Golden Eagles, who didn't allow a shot for the remainder of the half and generated a great deal of pressure in the Concordia end.
Pinzon's goal got them even and the two teams ended with a draw.
Cal State LA will return to action on Monday with a non-conference game against California Collegiate Athletic Association foe Cal State San Bernardino. Fans are not allowed currently at Golden Eagle home events, but the game will be streamed live on the CCAA Network with Michael Nemitz on the call.
