LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team took its shots at host Biola Tuesday night, but the Golden Eagles were unable to light up the scoreboard.
The Golden Eagles matched a season high with 20 shots, but none of them resulted in a goal and they fell to Biola, 1-0, at Al Barbour Field. Cal State LA (0-3-1) has taken 17 shots or more in three of its first four contests.
Ironically, Tuesday's match was the second time Cal State LA has recorded 20 shots in a game. The other time also resulted in a 1-0 loss, a non-conference home match against Cal State San Bernardino on Labor Day.
Biola (2-2) posted its second shutout in four games.
The Golden Eagles had a 20-4 advantage in shots for the game, including a 12-2 edge in the second half. Eight of the shots were on goal, but Biola goalkeeper Anna Boyer made seven saves and the Biola defense also saved a shot off the line to prevent a goal.
Cal State LA also had an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Lauren Sanchez had a team-high five shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Irma Pinzon had four shots.
Bryanna Avina had three shots, including two on goal, while
Sarah Trent had two shots.
Olivia Spanish had a pair of saves for the Golden Eagles.
The shot parade started early for the Golden Eagles and Avina had a pair of shots on goal in the first 20 minutes.
Cal State LA's best chances came during a six-minute stretch later in the half.
Sarah Trent had a great opportunity hit the crossbar and stay out and her rebound bid was saved by Boyer.
Then, in the 32nd minute,
Miyah Coleman had a bid kept out of the goal by the Biola defense.
Sanchez had a good chance in the 56th minute that was saved and her next attempt after getting the rebound went high.
One minute later, Katelyn Penner got the game's only goal for Biola.
The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on for the remainder of the game, but simply couldn't get the equalizer.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Azusa Pacific.Â
