FAIRBANKS, ALASKA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball had a fantastic comeback on Saturday in a big win over Drury and it was led by a performance for the ages from freshman
Emily Elliott.
Elliott recorded a season-high 30 kills to lead the Golden Eagles to a come-from-behind 21-25, 12-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-13 victory in their first match of the day at the Nanook Invitational at Alaska Fairbanks. Elliott had three of those kills late in the fifth set as Cal State LA rallied from a 12-8 deficit to win the match.
Cal State LA (4-3) will conclude play in the tournament later today against Colorado State Pueblo.
Elliott's 30 kills are tied with
Karla Santos and Dana Coffey for No. 2 in a match since 2001. That was the year the NCAA switched from rally scoring (where you could only score a point on your serve) to the current format where points are earned on every serve. Santos also had 30 kills in 2017 and Dana Coffey had 30 kills in 2002. All are just one kill behind the record of 31 set by Kymberly Silveyra in 2013.
She also had a service ace and two blocks assists to give her 32 points, which is tied for No. 2 all-time, behind only the 32.5 points earned by Marquis Mora in 2011.
The 30 kills are tied for No. 4 all-time in the program's history.
Eliza Cannon had seven kills, 36 set assists, 17 digs and two aces for the Golden Eagles, while Santos and
Alejandra Negron had seven kills each.
Ali Jansen had 11 kills for Drury (5-2).
Victoria Duarte had a team-high six blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 21 digs.
Cal State LA had a 62-54 edge in kills and an 8-4 advantage in blocks.Â
The Golden Eagles, after erasing the 2-0 sets deficit, had one last comeback in them in the fifth set. Down 12-8, Elliott delivered a kill to begin the turnaround. After an attack error, kills by Santos and Elliott and an ace by Cannon completed a 5-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 13-12 lead. Drury tied it at 13-13, but back-to-back kills by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles the win.
