Golden Eagles Are Moving On After PK Thriller

SAN FRANCISCO STATE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team was perfect when it counted Sunday in a first-round California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament game at San Francisco State.

The No. 5 seeded Golden Eagles converted on all five of their penalty kick tries to outlast the No. 4 Gators, 5-3, after the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two overtime periods at Cox Stadium. Gisell Cruz, Morgan Patea, Shelby Melin, Faith Baumgartner and Kimberly Gamez all made their tries to send the Golden Eagles onto the semi-finals, where they will face No. 1 seed Sonoma State on Friday at Cal Poly Pomona.

Shooting first, the Golden Eagles took a 3-2 lead and then got the advantage after San Francisco State's third attempt sailed high. Baumgartner then got the Golden Eagles to the brink of advancement with her make and Gamez sent the Golden Eagles forward with her make, which set off another jubilant celebration. Cal State LA had another one of those just a few days ago when Liliana Gonzalez' goal in double overtime against Cal Poly Pomona got the Golden Eagles into the tournament.

Cal State LA (6-9-3) has reached the semi-finals for the first time since 2017 when the Golden Eagles went straight to the semis after qualifying as the No. 2 seed. Cal State LA advanced with a result out of the first round for the first time since 2016 when the Golden Eagles beat Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, and ultimately reached the conference title game.

This was the second meeting between Cal State LA and San Francisco State (8-8-3) in the conference tournament with both games ending in 1-1 ties and then being decided on penalty kicks. San Francisco State won on penalty kicks to claim the 2010 conference title.

Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a goal by Irma Pinzon, who has been remarkable in the Golden Eagles' last two must-win games. Melody Landphear set her up with a beautiful pass that Pinzon ran onto on the left side of the box. She beat the goalkeeper to the ball, eluded her and shot the ball into an empty net for her fourth goal of the season. Pinzon now shares the team lead in goals with Gonzalez.

The Gators, though, tied it up in the 39th minute on a goal by Carissa Capinpin and the teams remained deadlocked the rest of the way. Not much happened in the first overtime period, but the Golden Eagles generated some chances in the second OT and got half of their six shots in the final 10-minute period.

Both teams ended the game with six shots each and the Gators had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State LA relied on both of its outstanding freshmen goalkeepers, once again, with Areli Reyes making two saves in the first half and Olivia Spanish making one save in the second half and two overtime periods. Reyes was in goal for the Golden Eagles during the shootout.
