MALIBU -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team held a first-quarter lead in a hard-fought battle with NCAA Division I opponent Pepperdine on Friday.
The Golden Eagles led 16-15 after the first period, but the Waves turned things around after that and posted a 66-41 exhibition victory in Firestone Fieldhouse.
Nicole Flennaugh led the Golden Eagles with 15 points, while
Jada Johnson had 10 points. Becky Obinma led Pepperdine with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Alyssa Fisher had five points for the Golden Eagles, while
Lily Buggs grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Cal State LA was 14-of-66 from the floor, including 4-of-20 from 3-point range. Pepperdine was 29-of-74 from the floor and 4-of-20 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 7-of-11 from the free-throw line, while Pepperdine was 4-of-8. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 59-42, and both teams finished with 16 turnovers.
Cal State LA started quickly and scored the first six points of the game on a pair of free throws by Fisher, an offensive rebound basket by Johnson and two free throws by
Briana Anugwom. After Pepperdine went on a 15-2 run to take a 15-8 lead, the Golden Eagles got a basket from Johnson and back-to-back 3-pointers from Flennaugh and Fisher to take a 16-15 lead after one quarter.
The Golden Eagles got a basket from Johnson and a rebound basket from
Raya Smith to take a 20-17 lead early in the second quarter, but Pepperdine went on a 11-2 run and led the rest of the way.
Melena Bland hit a 3-pointer to make it 28-25 and the Golden Eagles stayed within 33-25 at halftime.
Cal State LA will play its third and final exhibition game on Tuesday at San Diego State. ,Â
