SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball turned in a promising performance Tuesday in the third of three exhibition contests.
The Golden Eagles battled from start to finish in a 72-57 loss to NCAA Division I San Diego State at Viejas Arena. Cal State LA got contributions from all nine players who received playing time on Tuesday.
Cal State LA trailed at halftime, 41-27, but was outscored by just one point over the final two quarters.
Briana Anugwom had a team-high 13 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Lily Buggs had an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Sophia Ramos had a game-high 21 points to lead San Diego State.
Iyanna Lamb had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while
Jada Johnson had six points and seven rebounds,
Nicole Flennaugh had six points and two rebounds and
Raya Smith also had six points and two rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 32.8 percent for the game (21-of-64) and was 7-of-32 from 3-point range (21.9 percent). San Diego State shot 47.2 percent (27-of-57) and made a sizzling 13-of-23 from 3-point range (56.5 percent). The Golden Eagles were an efficient 8-of-9 from the free-throw line, while San Diego State was 5-of-8. Cal State LA had a 40-34 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 14 for San Diego State. Seven different players had steals in the game for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles fell into a quick 10-2 hole, but battled back nicely to pull to within 12-9 following a jumper by Anugwom, a 3-pointer by Flennaugh and a pair of free throws by Anugwom.

Yesenia Smith kept the margin at 36-27 late in the first half, but San Diego State scored the final five points of the second quarter to take a 41-27 halftime lead.
A 3-pointer by Anugwom and a jumper by Johnson pulled the Golden Eagles to within 41-32 early in the third quarter, but San Diego State extended the lead to 63-41 entering the final quarter.
Alyssa Fisher scored five straight points and assisted on a layup by Buggs to make it 65-50 with 5:41 to go, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
Cal State LA will open the regular season on Friday on the first day of the CCAA/PacWest Crossover that is being hosted by the Golden Eagles. Cal State Dominguez Hills will face Concordia at noon in the first game of the day, while Cal State LA will host Biola at 2 p.m. in the nightcap.
On Saturday, Cal State Dominguez Hills will face Biola at 2 p.m. and Cal State LA will meet Concordia at 4 p.m. to conclude the tourney.Â
