SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was unable to slow down the California Collegiate Athletic Association favorites Saturday in its CCAA opener.
The Golden Eagles put forth the effort against Cal State San Marcos, but the Cougars shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and posted a 95-75 victory in the Sports Center. Cal State LA (1-4, 0-1 CCAA) was coming off its first win of the season, but the Cougars (3-1, 1-0 CCAA) jumped out to a 43-31 lead after two quarters and kept the Golden Eagles at arm's length the rest of the way.
Freshman
Lily Buggs led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 14 points, while
Anai Washington had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Iyanna Lamb had 11 points and
Briana Anugwom had 10 points.
Akayla Hackson led five Cougars in double figures with 20 points.
Nicole Flennaugh and
Raya Smith had seven points each for the Golden Eagles, while
Jada Johnson had six points and seven rebounds.
Cal State LA was 25-of-58 from the field (43.6 percent) and made 5-of-12 attempts from 3-point range. Cal State San Marcos was 38-of-64 from the floor (59.4 percent) and knocked down 9-of-23 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 20-of-27 from the free-throw line, while Cal State San Marcos was 10-of-16. Cal State LA had a 33-32 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 11 for the Cougars.
The Golden Eagles led only once, after baskets by Johnson and Anugwom gave them a 4-2 advantage. Cal State San Marcos, though, scored the next nine points and led the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles trailed 20-11 after the first quarter, but closed to within four points at 22-18 after a 3-pointer by Lamb and four straight points by Washington. A three-point play by Anugwom pulled the Golden Eagles to within 24-21 and a 3-pointer by Anugwom kept the margin at 27-24, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
The Golden Eagles trailed 43-31 at halftime and 67-50 after three quarters.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
