LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team battled hard, but couldn't come up with a win Thursday against a talented Cal State East Bay team.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the first half, but the Pioneers took over in the second half of a 66-54 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (1-5, 0-2 CCAA) had a pair of players reach double figures, but Cal State East Bay (6-1, 2-0 CCAA) was 16-of-24 from the field over the final two quarters and pulled away for the win.
Nicole Flennaugh had 16 points and three assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Lily Buggs had 14 points and eight rebounds.Â
Mina Tameliau had a game-high 30 points for the Pioneers, hitting 11-of-18 shots overall, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Madison Schiller had 13 points for the Pioneers.
Alyssa Fisher had seven points, three rebounds and two assists, while
Jada Johnson had six points and seven rebounds.
Cal State LA made 19-of-61 from the floor (31.1 percent) and was 4-of-18 from 3-point range (22.2 percent). Cal State East Bay was 24-of-59 from the floor (40.7 percent) and 5-of-20 from 3-point range (25.0 percent). Cal State LA was 12-of-20 from the free-throw line, while Cal State East Bay was 13-of-14. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 48-30, but forced 24 turnovers while committing 17.
Cal State LA led for much of the first two quarters and took a 16-12 advantage after a 3-pointer by Buggs with 7:29 to go in the first half. The Golden Eagles, though, managed only three points for the rest of the quarter and the Pioneers took a 20-19 halftime lead.
Cal State East Bay scored the first five points of the third quarter and built a 45-36 lead heading into the final period.
Cal State LA made a late run and sliced a 14-point deficit down to six points following an 8-0 run that included a pair of free throws by Fisher, a free throw by Buggs, a jumper by Flennaugh and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh that made it 60-54 with 1:19 to go. The Pioneers, though, scored the final six points to close out the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
