LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put together its best performance in the young California Collegiate Athletic Association season with a home win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles poured in a season-high 87 points to outscore the Toros, 87-73, Saturday afternoon in University Gym. Cal State LA (2-5, 1-2 CCAA) also had its best rebounding performance of the season, posting a 54-23 rebounding edge.
Lily Buggs led the Golden Eagles with a season-high 27 points and nine rebounds, while
Nicole Flennaugh added 20 points.
Jada Johnson had a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double.
Auren Isaacson scored 17 points to lead three Toros in double figures. Danyell Booker had 15 points and eight rebounds and Destiny McAllister had 11 points.
Raya Smith added seven points for the Golden Eagles and
Anai Washington had seven points and six rebounds.
Cal State LA was 33-of-77 from the field (42.9 percent) and knocked down 10-of-34 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills was 26-of-57 from the floor (45.6 percent) and made 9-of-22 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 11-of-16 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was 12-of-17.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and took an 11-3 lead thanks in large part of 3-pointers from
Raya Smith, Flennaugh and Buggs. An offensive rebound and basket from Johnson gave the Golden Eagles a 23-17 lead after one period.
Cal State LA took its first double-digit lead early in the second period at 31-21 after a Johnson basket and the Golden Eagles took a 48-34 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers from Flennaugh and settled for a 48-37 halftime advantage.
The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the third quarter at 69-50 after a pair of free throws by Buggs and took a 69-57 advantage into the final period.
A 3-pointer by Flennaugh and a steal and layup by Buggs boosted the lead back to 19 points at 78-59 and the Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at San Francisco State.
