SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team survived some major foul trouble and picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles had four players pick up four fouls each, including three starters, but limited the Gators to just 25.8 percent shooting in a 66-50 victory Thursday night in San Francisco State's Main Gym. Cal State LA (3-5, 2-2 CCAA) picked up its second straight victory and pulled even with San Francisco State (4-4, 2-2 CCAA) in the conference standings.
Nicole Flennaugh and
Anai Washington had 12 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Jada Johnson had a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double.
fAlexsandra Alvarado had a game-high 13 points for the Gators.
Alyssa Fisher had nine points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Lily Buggs had nine points and seven rebounds.
Raya Smith added eight points.
Cal State LA shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the floor and made 9-of-19 from 3-point range (47.4 percent). Cal State LA was also 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State was 16-of-62 from the floor and just 2-of-21 from 3-point range. The Gators were 16-of-23 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 45-44 rebounding edge and each team committed 14 turnovers.
It took the Golden Eagles a little time to get going and trailed, 16-12, after one quarter. Cal State LA also trailed by four points in the second quarter, 21-17, but got a basket by
Yesenia Smith, a 3-pointer by Buggs and a basket by
Raya Smith to take a 24-21 lead before settling for a 24-23 halftime advantage.
Cal State LA got a jumper by
Raya Smith and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh to start the second half and open up a 29-23 advantage and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way. The Gators closed to within 38-36, but the Golden Eagles closed the third quarter with six straight points from Johnson to take a 44-36 lead into the fourth period. A 3-pointer by Smith and a basket by Buggs opened the fourth quarter to take a 49-36 lead. A four-point play by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 62-42 with four minutes to go.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with an afternoon game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
