SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team completed a perfect trip with a California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles ran their current winning streak to three in a row with a 76-60 win over the Otters in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State LA (4-5, 3-2 CCAA) took control in the first half and led steadily the rest of the way.
Cal State LA got a career day from
Nicole Flennaugh, who poured in a career-high 34 points in an electrifying, record-breaking performance. She set a new program record with nine 3-pointers, eclipsing the previous mark of eight that she shared with Sydney Bordonaro in 2019. She was 11-of-22 overall and hit her only free throw. The Golden Eagles as a team hit 15 of their 3-point tries, which is also a program single-game record.
Iyanna Lamb added nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Lily Buggs had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Francine Potts and Lauryn Pointer had 15 points each for Cal State Monterey Bay (1-8, 0-5 CCAA).
Raya Smith and
Alyssa Fisher had eight points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was 24-of-61 overall (39.3 percent) and a sizzling 15-of-30 from 3-point range. Cal State Monterey Bay was 20-of-60 (33 percent) and 7-of-17 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-21 from the free-throw line, while the Otters were 13-of-15. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 46-36, but committed only 10 turnovers while forcing 17.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead and never looked back. After surrendering the first basket of the game, the Golden Eagles scored the next 13 points on a 3-pointer by Flennaugh, two baskets by Buggs, and two more 3-pointers by Flennaugh. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 37-18 lead. A 3-pointer by Melania Bland gave the Golden Eagles their biggest first-half lead at 43-22.
Lamb hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 55-34 lead and they led 62-45 after three quarters.
Cal State LA saw its lead cut to 10 points, 65-55, but a four-point play by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 14-point play with four minutes left. Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action with a non-conference home game against Central Washington on Monday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m.
