Golden Eagles Fall Short Against Central Washington

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team started well and had a promising fourth-quarter surge, but ultimately fell to Central Washington Monday in a non-conference game in University Gym.

The Golden Eagles led by five points after the first period, but couldn't sustain their momentum in a 70-62 loss to the Wildcats of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Cal State LA (4-6) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Wildcats (7-4) completed a two-game sweep of its trip to Southern California.

Alyssa Fisher scored a season-high 18 points and added five assists for the Golden Eagles, while Nicole Flennaugh had 14 points and four assists. Jada Johnson had a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Kizzah Maltezo had a game-high 25 points for Central Washington, while Kassidy Malcolm had 22 points and nine rebounds.

Lily Buggs had 11 points and seven rebounds

Cal State LA shot 40.3 percent for the game (27-of-67), but dipped after making 9-of-16 attempts in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles were 4-of-12 from 3-point range and just 4-of-8 from the free-throw line. Central Washington shot 42.4 percent for the game (28-of-66) and made 9-of-32 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were also 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Central Washington had a 40-37 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed only 10 turnovers to 13 for the Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles scored the last eight points of the first quarter to take a 20-15 lead. A basket by Anai Washington started the run and a basket by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles the lead at 16-15. Johnson scored inside and free throws by Washington and Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a five-point advantage.

A 3-pointer by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 23-17 early in the second quarter and baskets by Washington and Johnson equaled that advantage at 27-21. Central Washington, though erased the deficit with a 7-0 run before a jumper by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 29-28 edge.

A pair of free throws by Fisher and a basket by Johnson put the Golden Eagles ahead, 33-31, but the Wildcats closed the half with an 8-2 run to take a 39-35 halftime lead.

After surrending the opening basket of the second half, the Golden Eagles got a layup from Buggs, a jumper from Flennaugh and a jumper from Buggs to tie it at 41-41, but the Wildcats scored the next five points and led the rest of the way.

Cal State LA sliced into a 13-point deficit after a 3-pointer by Flennaugh, a steal and layup by Fisher and a layup by Buggs to make it 60-54 with four minutes to go, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Cal State LA will return to action on Jan. 2 with a home game against Cal State San Marcos at 1 p.m.
