SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team will see a familiar opponent in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The No. 4 seed Golden Eagles will face No. 5 seed Sonoma State in a first-round match on Thursday in Coussoulis Arena at Cal State San Bernardino. The Golden Eagles (17-8) will be meeting the Seawolves (13-12) for the third time this season. Each team won on its home court during the regular season, the Golden Eagles taking a three-set decision in Los Angeles on Sept. 18 and the Seawolves winning in four sets last week in Rohnert Park.
The teams also have an extensive history in CCAA Tournament action. Cal State LA is making its sixth straight appearance in the tournament and this will be the fourth meeting with Sonoma State. Cal State LA is 2-1 in the previous three matches, including a four-set win in the conference semi-finals in 2019. Sonoma State won in four sets in 2016 and Cal State LA took four-set wins in 2017 and 2019.
Cal State LA is seeking its first CCAA Tournament championship after coming extremely close in 2019. After wins against San Francisco State and Sonoma State, the Golden Eagles went five sets with tourney host Cal State San Bernardino in the championship match, eventually falling, 25-17, 15-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-6. It was the first time Cal State San Bernardino was taken to five sets in the 2019 season.
The winner of the Cal State LA-Sonoma State match will advance to a semi-final contest against tournament host and No. 1 seed Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The championship match will be held on Saturday at 7 p.m.
