ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team put the finishing touches on another successful regular season by sweeping Humboldt State on Saturday in Lumberjack Arena.
The Golden Eagles prevailed in a tight first set before rolling in the two sets of a 25-23, 25-12, 25-14 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over the 'Jacks. Cal State LA (17-8, 13-5 CCAA) finished fourth in the CCAA and will face No. 5 seed Sonoma State in a CCAA Tournament quarterfinal match on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Cal State San Bernardino.
Cal State LA also holds the No. 4 ranking in the latest NCAA West Region rankings.
Alejandra Negron had 14 kills and 12 digs for the Golden Eagles in the win over Humboldt State on Saturday, while
Emily Elliott had 11 kills and four digs.
Lindsey McLaughlin had eight kills and 13 digs for Humboldt State.
Karla Santos had nine kills and five digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 13 digs.
Jaden Grova had 22 set assists, three kills and three service aces, while
Eliza Cannon had four kills, 14 set assists and seven digs.
Cal State LA had a 46-25 edge in kills and hit at a .367 percentage to just .100 for the 'Jacks. The Golden Eagles had a 4-3 advantage in blocks and had five aces to six errors compared to Humboldt State's four aces and six errors.
The Golden Eagles opened up an early 8-3 lead, but the 'Jacks rallied, eventually taking leads of 20-17 and 21-18 before a bad set, a kill by Negron, an attack error and a kill by Negron erased the deficit. The set was tied at 23-23 before the Golden Eagles got a kill by Negron and an attack error by the 'Jacks to win the set.
Cal State LA won the final two sets by large margins to end the match. The Golden Eagles won the last six points of the second set on a service error, two straight kills by
Victoria Duarte, a kill by Elliott, a kill by Santos and an attack error. In the final set, the Golden Eagles won the first five points and were never threatened.
