IRVINE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start in its 2021-22 season opener against Biola in the CCAA/PacWest Challenge at Concordia.

The Golden Eagles trailed by 22 points at halftime and couldn't recover in an 86-67 loss to the Eagles at CU Arena. Cal State LA battled back, but was unable to overcome the big halftime deficit.

Elisha Duplechan had 19 points and six assists for the Golden Eagles, while Adrease Jackson had 13 points and three rebounds. Alexander Sokol and Ben Uloko had 11 points each.

Alex Wright scored 16 points to lead five Biola players in double figures.

Freshman Shane Bell had nine points and four assists for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 47.3 percent for the game (26-of-55) and was 6-of-21 from 3-point range despite starting the game 1-of-9 in the first half. Biola shot 56.1 percent (32-of-57) and made 9-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 9-of-14 from the free-throw line, while Biola was 13-of-20. Biola enjoyed a 36-23 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 12 for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will play host Concordia on Saturday at 5 p.m. on the final day of the tournament.
