LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team used a quick start and some outstanding defense to record a second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles got a goal from
Liliana Gonzalez in the ninth minute and made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over Cal State San Marcos at University Stadium. Cal State LA (2-7-2, 2-2-1 CCAA) climbed into a tie for sixth place in the conference with the victory, pulling ahead of Cal State San Marcos (5-2-2, 1-2-2 CCAA) in the process.
Cal State LA used both of its talented freshman goalkeepers in the shutout win with
Olivia Spanish making four saves in the first half and
Areli Reyes making two more in the second half. One of the biggest saves of the night, though, came from senior
Miyah Coleman, who was able to kick away a dangerous scoring chance for the Cougars in the 74th minute.
The lone goal of the game came early and was a result of a great pass from
Erin Schrock, who sent a beautiful through ball to an onrushing Gonzalez, who was able to get the ball past Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper Allison Marcure and tap into the goal.
It was the second goal of the season for Gonzalez and the first assist for Schrock.
Cal State San Marcos had a 9-6 advantage in shots, while both teams had two corner kicks.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
