Golden Eagles See Rally Fall Short On Senior Day

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team saw a spirited rally fall just short Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles stunned the Broncos with a quick 9-0 run that sliced a 13-point deficit to just four points with two minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get in a 72-65 loss in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-14, 7-13 CCAA) converted three straight turnovers into points during a 9-0 run that made it 67-63, but Cal Poly Pomona (19-6, 15-5 CCAA) made its free throws down the stretch to secure the tight win.

Khalil Williams led five Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points, while Fard Muhammad and Shacquille Dawkins had 12 points each. Jordan Rogers had 11 points before fouling out and CJ Fisher came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

William Christmas had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Broncos, while Riley Schaefer had 13 points.

Cal State LA shot 49 percent (25-of-51) overall and was 10-of-28 from 3-point range, while Cal Poly Pomona shot 48 percent (25-of-52) and was 7-of-20 from 3-point range. The Broncos had a large disparity at the free-throw line, where they went 15-of-31, while the Golden Eagles were only 5-of-13. Cal Poly Pomona had a 35-28 rebounding edge, while both teams had 19 turnovers.

Cal State LA started quickly with Rogers hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to open the game. The Golden Eagles led as late as 23-18 in the first half, but the Broncos closed the half on an 11-0 run to take a 29-23 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles got back-to-back 3-pointers from Muhammad to open the second half and a steal by Muhammad led to a basket by Dawkins that tied the game at 34-34 with 17 minutes left. The Broncos opened up a 53-39 lead, only to see 3-pointers by Bailey Kikuchi and Rogers and a basket by Fisher slice the deficit to 53-47 with 11 minutes to play.

The Golden Eagles still trailed, 67-54, before a basket by Williams, a 3-pointer by Muhammad and two more baskets made it a 67-63 game with 2:06 to go. A layup by Dawkins made it 69-65 with 22 seconds remaining, but the Golden Eagles couldn't get any closer.

Cal State LA honored its six seniors -- Khalil Williams, Bailey Kikuchi, Jordan Rogers, Shacquille Dawkins, Ja'Sean Lewis and Fard Muhammad - in pre-game ceremonies.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Sonoma State.
