LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team stood toe-to-toe with No. 4 UC San Diego Saturday night, but fell short in a physical California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in RIMAC Arena.
The Golden Eagles led early, but a 20-0 run by the hosts was too much to overcome in an 80-67 loss to the Tritons. Cal State LA (11-13, 6-12 CCAA) dropped its fourth straight game and slipped out of eighth place in the conference with four conference games remaining.
Michael Wright led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 15 points, while
Khalil Williams had 14 points.
Jordan Rogers had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double and
Ja'Sean Lewis had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Christian Oshita had 19 points to lead UC San Diego (24-1, 18-1), which won its 16th consecutive win.
C.J. Fisher had seven points for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 38 percent (19-of-50) and made 10-of-25 from 3-point range (40 percent), but UC San Diego shot 60 percent (27-of-45) and was 8-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 19-of-24 from the free-throw line, while UC San Diego was 18-of-23.Â
The Golden Eagles started well and took a 10-4 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers from Wright and Lewis. UC San Diego, though, went on a 20-0 run to open up a 24-10 lead and built a 42-23 lead at halftime.
Cal State LA seemed to get a spark early in the second half when
Bailey Kikuchi took an elbow to the face and, after a review to confirm a flagrant foul, hit a pair of free throws. The Golden Eagles maintained possession of the ball and cut the margin to 53-41 after a layup by Fisher. A pair of free throws by Williams trimmed the deficit to 54-43 and a jumper by
Fard Muhammad kept it at 58-47.
That was as close as the Golden Eagles would get, though, and UC San Diego maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
