Golden Eagles Come Up Short Against Toros

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a rough day on the boards Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association matchup with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 54-34, and surrendered 33 second-chance points in a disappointing 79-66 loss to the Toros in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-12, 6-8 CCAA) lost its second straight game and also saw Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-10, 7-7 CCAA) complete a season-sweep. The Golden Eagles are now 10th in the conference with eight games remaining. The top eight qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

Nicole Flennaugh had 18 points and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while Sydney Bordonaro, Rachael DiRegolo and Mackenzie Barnes had 10 points each.

Destinee Williams and Janelle Sumilong led five Toros in double figures with 18 points. Williams just missed a double-double with nine points.

Amiete Nyingifa had eight points and two steals for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 38.2 percent overall (26-of-68) and made just 3-of-14 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 40.8 percent overall (31-of-76) and made 6-of-24 from 3-point range. The Toros made all 11 of their free throws, while the Golden Eagles were 11-of-17. The rebounding disparity, though, was too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome. Cal State Dominguez Hills had 22 offensive rebounded and owned a decisive 33-9, edge in second-chance points.

The Golden Eagles fell into a quick 12-4 hold, but battled back behind Nyingifa, who scored three straight baskets to get the Golden Eagles to within 14-10. Cal State LA trailed by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, but battled back to a 31-27 halftime deficit.

A pair of free throws by Bordonaro and back-to-back baskets by Flennaugh tied it at 33 and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 36-33 lead. Another 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 39-36 lead. A pair of free throws by Nyingifa tied it at 43-43 with 3:13 to go in the period, but the Toros closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 54-45 lead into the fourth period.

A jumper by Bordonaro made it 54-51 early in the fourth quarter, but the Toros went on a 17-4 run to take a 71-55 lead with 3:39 to go and put the game away.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a Homecoming game against Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 p.m.
