TARLETON -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team saved its best for last on Saturday as the Golden Eagles wrapped up play in Tarleton State's season-opening tournament.
The Golden Eagles swept past West Alabama, 25-19, 25-15, 26-24, Saturday morning and recorded their first victory of the season. Cal State LA (1-3) had previously lost competitive matches to No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth, No. 10 Tarleton State and No. 14 Rockhurst.
The Golden Eagles rebounded nicely from a long day on Friday when they fell in a sensational five-set match against host Tarleton State and followed that up with a hard-fought four-set loss to Rockhurst.
Karla Santos had a tremendous match for the Golden Eagles on Saturday, leading the way with 16 kills, 11 digs, four service aces and a .441 hitting percentage.
Alejandra Negron, who had an outstanding toiurnament for Cal State LA, had 13 kills and five digs, while
Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills, a hitting percentage of .450 and a team-high seven blocks.
Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 19 digs.
Shea McGovern had 23 set assists, while
Laisa Maeda had 13 set assists.
Cal State LA had a 44-28 edge in kills and hit at a .275 percentage while limiting West Alabama to .066. The Golden Eagles also had a 10-3 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA had seven service aces and 10 errors, while West Alabama had three aces and four errors.
The Golden Eagles prevailed in a tight first set with some strong play down the stretch. After trailing 17-16, the Golden Eagles took the lead for good after a kill by Santos and a block by Crenshaw and Maeda. West Alabama pulled within 19-18, but a kill by Crenshaw, an attack error, a block by
Tori Galloway and Crenshaw, an ace by McGovern and a kill by Santos got the Golden Eagles to set point. One point later, a kill by Crenshaw ended the set.
Cal State LA, which displayed some brilliant play throughout the tournament, was at it again in the second set, jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead after a kill by McGovern and opened up a 16-5 lead after kills by Santos and Crenshaw. Kills by Negron and Santos and an attack error ended the set.
The Golden Eagles needed to show some resolve to complete the sweep. Cal State LA trailed 22-18 and 24-21 before rattling off the final four points to end the match. Kills by Azevedo and Crenshaw and a block by Crenshaw and Azevedo tied it at 24-24 and back-to-back aces from Santos ended it.
Santos was named to a 10-player All-Tournament Team.
Cal State LA will return to action at home on Thursday at 12:30 against Alaska.
