LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team put themselves in position for an exciting finish Saturday in its non-conference match against defending PacWest Conference champion Point Loma, but the end result wasn't what the Golden Eagles were hoping for.
The Golden Eagles were victimized by a pair of own goals and fell to the Sea Lions, 2-1, in a high-paced contest at University Stadium. Cal State LA (2-1) lost for the first time this season, while Point Loma (2-1) won its second straight since dropping its season opener.
Cal State LA fell behind, 1-0, in the 25th minute and got the equalizer in the 60th minute on a goal by
Adyson Willett. Point Loma, though, got the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute and did a strong job down the stretch of running out the clock while keeping the Golden Eagles at bay.
Cal State LA had a 10-9 advantage in shots, while Point Loma had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Amanda Leal made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Emma Hinson had three saves for the Sea Lions.
Point Loma took a 1-0 lead when a cross from Abbey Teagle found its way into the box where Julia Glaser was racing with a pair of Cal State LA defenders toward the goal. The ball wound up being knocked into the goal inadvertantly for the first score of the contest.
The Golden Eagles tied it in the 59th minute when a free kick by
Nicolette Elliott was headed into the goal beautfully by Willett.
Point Loma went ahead in the 75th minute when a corner kick by Abbi Swanson soared dangerously toward the Cal State LA goal and was again batted into the goal by a defender.
Cal State LA got two shots each from Willett,
Danya Gutierrez and
Natalie Reynoso.
Cal State LA will return to action on Monday with a home game against Western Washington.Â
