LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team provided the sparks in an exciting game against No. 9 Western Washington.
The Golden Eagles got a game-winning goal from
Anahie Duran late in the first overtime period and beat the Vikings, 1-0, at University Stadium. Cal State LA (3-1) bounced back nicely after first loss of the season on Saturday and handed Western Washington (3-1) its first loss of the year. The Vikings had won their first three games by identical 1-0 scores.
Duran made a couple of key plays on the game-winning sequence seven minutes into overtime. She dribbled the ball smartly down the middle of the field and sent a perfect pass to an onrushing
Valerie Mares, who almost won the game herself, only to see her shot hit the near post. Duran got to the rebound and fired off a shot that was kept out by Western Washington goalkeeper Natalie Dierickx, whose quick reflexes allowed her to make a sensational stop. Duran then beat a pair of defenders to the ball and knocked the ball into the net to set off a jubilant celebration.
The goal was Duran's first of the season.
"It felt really good," Duran said of her game-winner. "We've been working really hard and last game we kind of had a situation where we ended up scoring two goals on ourselves and lost, 2-1. So the overall goal today was to come out and make a statement. My goal was just a team effort."
The game was action-packed throughout, although scoring chances were hard to come by against two excellent defensive squads. Cal State LA had a 14-11 edge in shots, although several were blocked by the Western Washington defense. Western Washington had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State LA's best chance in the first half came on a shot by
Paulina Chaidez that was stopped by Dierickx, who dove to deflect out of the far corner of the goal.Â
In the second half,
Nicolette Elliott had a shot that bounced off the crossbar off a free kick.
Cal State LA goalkeeper
Amanda Leal made a pair of saves for her second shutout of the season. Once again, Cal State LA used waves of substitutes and the final one about midway through the first overtime period paid dividends for head coach
Erik Garcia.
Cal State LA will return to action in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at home against Stanislaus State on Friday, Sept. 27.
