Golden Eagles Hang On For A Big Win Over Warriors

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team made it two wins in a row against nationally-ranked foes on Friday with a big win against previously unbeaten Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles got first-half goals from Ashtyn Bracamonte and Lauren Sanchez and held off a late Warrior charge to post a 2-1 win in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both schools at University Stadium. Cal State LA (4-1, 1-0 CCAA) missed on a pair of golden opportunities to extend its lead early in the second half and then had to hold off a spirited Stanislaus State (5-1, 0-1 CCAA) comeback attempt at the end.

Cal State LA improved to 2-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. In their last game, the Golden Eagles upended then-No. 9 Western Washington, 1-0, in overtime before handing the No. 17 Warriors their first loss of the season on Friday.

Stanislaus State had a 16-15 edge in shots, while both teams had seven corner kicks.

Bracamonte put the Golden Eagles on the board in the 10th minute with a nice setup from Anahie Duran, who had the game-winner against the Vikings on Sept. 16. Duran sent a through pass to a sprinting Bracamonte, who went in alone and hit a shot inside the far post for her second goal of the season.

Sanchez then added her first goal as a Golden Eagle in the 31st minute with an assist from Leslie Ramirez. The freshman fired a beautiful shot from the left side of the box inside the far post to give Cal State LA a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles came out strongly in the second half and nearly made it 3-0 just three minutes into the second half, but a point-blank shot by Sanchez rolled just wide of the goal. Later in the half, Ramirez almost had what would have been a spectacular highlight-reel type goal, only to see her bid bounce off the crossbar.

Stanislaus State, after weathering the storm, made things interesting in the 78th minute when Summer England received a pass from Jazzmin Thompson and hit a nice shot inside the far post to make it 2-1.

The Golden Eagles held firm down the stretch, though, to preserve the big conference win.

Amanda Leal made seven saves for the Golden Eagles, while Alyssa Herrmann made five saves for the Warriors.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Chico State at 2 p.m.
