FRESNO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team faced some adversity for the first time this season and the Golden Eagles excelled after allowing an early goal to upset-minded Fresno Pacific.
The Golden Eagles gave up their first goal this season in the fourth minute of the game, but second-half goals from
Tim Klefisch and
Robin Lindahl lifted the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 win Saturday night at Ramirez Field. Cal State LA (3-0), ranked 10th in the nation in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, really picked up the pace in the second half and posted an impressive win.
Cal State LA had a 19-5 advantage in shots, including a 13-2 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Fresno Pacific stunned the Golden Eagles with a passing sequence in the fourth minute that resulted in a goal. Hugo Hernandez lofted a pass to Fellipe Souza, who crossed it to Jose Vargas, who finished for his first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles had a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first half and picked up the pace in the second half to create a pair of goals.
Angel Estrada helped set up the tying goal when he had a high-quality chance kept out of the net via a team save. Fresno Pacific goalkeeper Patrick Timmer was given a yellow card and the Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty kick, which Klefisch buried for his second goal of the season.
The game-winner came about eight minutes later when Lindahl scored his second goal of the season.
Jorge Orellana crossed the ball into the box and Lindahl knocked it into the goal in the 78th minute.Â
Cal State LA's stout defense took it from there and allowed only one shot the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Monday with a road game at Notre Dame de Namur.
