IRVINE -- Cal State LA's women's team had another thrilling match against Concordia-Irvine on Wednesday and
Chelsey Ruiz made sure the Golden Eagles were the ones celebrating when it all was over.
Ruiz captured a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles to lift the Golden Eagles to a 4-3 win over the Eagles in a four-hour marathon at the Newport Tennis Club. Cal State LA (6-5) dropped the doubles point, but won four of the six singles contests to pull out the victory. The Golden Eagles had dropped a 4-3 decision to Concordia (6-7) in the first meeting between the two programs in Los Angeles on Feb. 27.
Isabella Lopez and
Amanda Schneider won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, but the Golden Eagles fell at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to lose the point to the Eagles.
The Golden Eagles, though, turned things around in the singles matches.
Luciana Di Laura won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, over Taylor Lau, Lopez won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4, over Lisa Suzuki and
Berta Acero Garcia won at No. 4 singles over Johanna Keeline, 6-4, 6-3.
Mariko Sagara fell in a titanic battle at No. 6 singles, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, to Hanna Van Nattan, leaving the match tied at 3-3.
After dropping the first set to Samantha Schuster, Ruiz stormed back to win the second set, 6-2. She then kept the momentum riding in the tiebreaker, winning that, 7-1, to earn the victory for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Middlebury beginning at 10 a.m.
