LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had to battle its way to a hard-earned California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Thursday night in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles took a five-point lead with 1:26 to go and then had to hang on for a 52-51 victory over Chico State. Cal State LA (9-15, 6-14 CCAA) had a late turnover that gave the Wildcats possession with a chance to take the lead in the final nine seconds, but
Chiderah Uzowuru grabbed the rebound of a missed shot and Cal State LA was able to run out the clock.
Uzowuru led the Golden Eagles (9-15, 6-14 CCAA) with 19 points and eight rebounds, while
Mackenzie Barnes had 10 points and five rebounds.
Christine Delapina had nine points, two rebounds and seven assists. She also hit a tough shot in the lane to give the Golden Eagles a 52-47 lead with less than 90 seconds to go.
McKena Barker had 11 points and eight rebounds for Chico State (12-10, 9-10 CCAA).
Rachael DiRegolo, who was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 team earlier in the day, had five points, four rebounds and one block.
Alyssa Fisher had five points, three assists and a pair of blocks.
Cal State LA shot 40 percent for the game (22-of-55) and missed all seven attempts from 3-point range. Chico State shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) overall and was 7-of-25 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 8-of-12 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats were just 2-of-10.
Cal State LA enjoyed a 39-31 rebounding edge and committed 12 turnovers to 11 for the Wildcats.
It was a close game throughout with neither team building a lead larger than six points. Cal State LA opened up a 14-8 lead with three minutes remaining in the first quarter after a layup by
Jolene Robinson, while Chico State's biggest lead came at 3-0.
Cal State LA took a 14-12 lead after the first period and led by five points late in the first half after a basket by Uzowuru before a 3-pointer by Chico State's Myli Martinez made it 28-26 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as five points in the third period, but a 3-pointer by Madison Wong tied the game at 38-38 entering the fourth.
The Golden Eagles led by slim margins throughout the final period, and got baskets from Delapina and Uzowuru to take a 50-45 lead and another basket by Delapina to make it 52-47. The Wildcats scored the next four points, pulling to within one point with 15 seconds to go. Chico State forced a turnover and got a contested shot in the lane that missed with Uzowuru grabbing the rebound and getting fouled. Chico State still had fouls to give and got its fourth foul with three seconds to go. An inbounds pass was caught by Barnes and held for a jump ball with the Golden Eagles maintaining possession with one second left and one inbound pass later ended the game.
Cal State LA will play its final home game of the season on Saturday against Humboldt State and honor seniors
