Golden Eagles Stumble In Conference Opener

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team never could get untracked Thursday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles struggled through a frigid shooting night and fell to the host Pioneers, 79-49, in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (3-2, 0-1 CCAA) shot just 28.8 percent and was held below 76 points for the first time this season. Cal State East Bay (4-1, 1-0 CCAA) held the Golden Eagles to just five first-half baskets while building a 30-15 halftime lead.

Shacquille Dawkins had 13 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Khalil Williams and Fard Muhammad had eight points each.

Zafir Williams had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers.

Michael Wright had eight rebounds for Cal State LA, while Ja'Sean Lewis had six points, four rebounds and one steal.

Cal State LA was just 17-of-59 from the floor, including just 4-of-27 from 3-point range. Cal State East Bay shot 50 percent (31-of-62), including 7-of-15 from 3-point range. 

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 41-32 and committed 14 turnovers to 16 for the Pioneers.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a conference game at Humboldt State.
