SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had another frustrating result Thursday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles fell in extra time for the second time in the past three games when the Coyotes got a goal with just 27 seconds left in the second overtime to prevail, 2-1, at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State LA (5-4, 2-3 CCAA) lost its third straight game since being ranked No. 10 in the nation.
Cal State LA fell behind, 1-0, but got a game-tying goal in the 60th minute on a goal by
Irma Pinzon and had several chances to go ahead before the Coyotes got the game-winner from Kelly Kevershan in the waning moments of the game.
Cal State LA had an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles, though, just missed on several potential scoring chances and had trouble connecting on passes consistently during the contest.
Goalkeeper
Amanda Leal made a diving save to thwart a point-blank shot by Cal State San Bernardino's Vidalia Abarca to keep the Golden Eagles close early in the second half.Â
About six minutes later, Pinzon tied the game at 1-1 after receiving a through ball from
Nicolette Elliott and knocking in a shot for her first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles spent the remainder of the second half threatening for the game-winner. Yacqualine Garcia sent a long free kick off the crossbar with about 27 minutes left and Pinzon had a shot go just wide of the net after she got a dangerous chance off a pass from
Valerie Mares. Pinzon had another chance with time winding down, but didn't quite get all of it and Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Carly Luna made a diving save to send the game into overtime.
Leal stood strong as Cal State San Bernardino had three good looks in the opening minutes of the first overtime period, but Pinzon and
Paulina Chaidez responded with good chances of their own before the period ended.
Kimberly Surio had a good chance in the 109th minute, but Luna made a diving save for the Coyotes. Cal State San Bernardino then got the game-winner from Kevershan to deny the Golden Eagles any points.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona at 11:30 a.m.
