POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team worked overtime once again Sunday and earned a draw this time against a nationally-ranked opponent.
The Golden Eagles played extra time for the third time in the last four matches and earned a 0-0 tie with No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Kellogg Stadium. Cal State LA (5-4-1, 2-3-1 CCAA) snapped a three-match losing streak with the tie with two of those losses coming in extra time.
Cal State LA, which was ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation earlier this season, improved to 2-0-1 against nationally-ranked opponents. The Golden Eagles beat Western Washington, 1-0, and Stanislaus State, 2-1, previously.
The Golden Eagles played a strong game, especially after halftime. Cal State LA outshot Cal Poly Pomona (8-3-2, 4-1-2 CCAA), 8-2, in the second half, while both teams had three shots in the two overtime periods.
Cal State LA got a good showing from goalkeeper
Amanda Leal, who recorded a season-high nine saves. Leal was especially busy early and made six of her saves in the first half when Cal Poly Pomona had a 9-3 edge.
The shots were even at 14-14 for the game, while Cal State LA had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Sydney Williams made five saves.
Paulina Chaidez had a team-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Irma Pinzon had three shots and
Ashtyn Bracamonte and
Natalie Reynoso had two each.
Chaidez had two chances late in the second half and Williams made saves on Chaidez and
Leslie Ramirez in the first overtime period to extend the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a road game at 7 p.m.
