Golden Eagles Come Up Just Short To Gators

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was poised for an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Saturday, only to see those hopes dashed in the fourth quarter.

The Golden Eagles led by eight points entering the final period, but couldn't hold on and San Francisco State rallied for an 89-87 victory in University Gym. After pouring in 26 third-quarter points to take control of a tight game, the Golden Eagles sputtered on offense for most of the final period and the Gators took advantage. Cal State LA (6-6, 3-5 CCAA)  led for most of the contest and never trailed by more than six points.

Chiderah Uzowuru led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mackenzie Barnes had 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Rachael DiRegolo had 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Christine Delapina had 11 points and a career-high 12 assists.

Isabella Lamonea had a game-high 19 points and five rebounds for San Francisco State (7-7, 6-3 CCAA, while Toni Edwards had 12 points and 14 assists.

Madison Adams hit two more 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles and finished with six points. Jo Ana Adams had five points and four rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 43.8 percent for the game (32-of-73) and was 5-of-16 from 3-point range. San Francisco State shot 45.6 percent (31-of-68) and made 6-of-14 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 16-of-20 from the free-throw line, while the Gators were 19-of-28. Cal State LA had a 43-40 rebounding edge, but committed 12 turnovers to just nine for the Gators.

Cal State LA started well and took a 21-8 lead after a three-point play by Jo Ana Adams. A 3-pointer by Delapina gave the Golden Eagles a 24-13 lead after one quarter. The Gators, though, opened the second quarter with a 13-2 run to tie the game at 26-26 and took a three-point lead at 42-39 before a basket by Jolene Robinson made it 42-41 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by as many as six points early in the third quarter, but responded with a 10-2 run to regain the lead at 53-51. After the Gators tied it at 53-53, the Golden Eagles caught fire and ultimately built a 67-57 lead late in the period after a pair of free throws by Delapina.

The Golden Eagles lost their lead quickly in the fourth quarter and battled with the Gators down the stretch. A layup by Delapina gave the Golden Eagles their last lead at 77-75 with 2:39 to go, but the Gators scored the next eight points to take over the game. A 3-pointer by Madison Adams cut it to 85-82, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get before a 3-pointer by Uzowuru at the buzzer.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday at Humboldt State.
