SAN FRANCISO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got back into the win column with a big California Collegiate Athletic Association decision at San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles turned in their best defensive effort of the season and beat the Gators, 50-39, Thursday night in Main Gym. Cal State LA (7-11, 4-10 CCAA) snapped an eight-game losing streak and evened the season series with San Francisco State (8-11, 7-7 CCAA).
Mackenzie Barnes had 15 points and six rebounds to lead the way, while Rachel DiRegolo just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Madison Adams had seven points and four rebounds.
Chiderah Uzowuru had five points and nine rebounds.
Cal State LA didn't have a great shooting night, but the Golden Eagles got the job done. The Golden Eagles shot 30.2 percent (19-of-63) and were just 3-of-19 from 3-point range. The Gators, meanwhile, shot just 29.2 percent (14-of-48) and were 3-of-14 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-11 from the free-throw line, while the Gators were 8-of-12. Cal State LA held an 38-37 rebounding edge, which was a big improvement over last Saturday's game against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Golden Eagles also forced 20 turnovers and committed only 11.
The Golden Eagles trailed early, but grabbed the lead by the end of the first period and never looked back. Cal State LA faced an early 9-4 deficit, but went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Adams scored to start the run and Barnes scored to make it 9-8. A pair of free throws by Uzowuru gave the Golden Eagles a 10-9 lead and a layup by Adams after a steal by Uzowuru gave them a 12-9 lead after one quarter.

Jo Ana Adams to open the second period extended the lead to 14-9. A
Madison Adams 3-pointer and a basket by Barnes gave the Golden Eagles a 19-13 lead and back-to-back baskets by Barnes gave them a 25-17 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles maintained their advantage in the third period. A 3-pointer by
Alyssa Fisher made it 30-22 and a three-point play by Uzowuru gave the Golden Eagles a 37-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
A 3-pointer by
Christine Delapina gave the Golden Eagles a 40-32 lead early in the period and a basket by
Rachael DiRegolo made it 43-33 with 6:28 to go. Two free throws by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 49-38 edge with 1:53 to go and Cal State LA went on to an important road win.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Sonoma State at 1 p.m.
