LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put forth a good effort Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles struggled from the field and wound up on the short end of a 74-58 decision to the Broncos. Cal State LA (6-10, 3-9 CCAA) dropped its seventh straight game, while Cal Poly Pomona (14-2, 10-1 CCAA) remained in the chase behind first-place UC San Diego.
Chiderah Uzowuru had a game-high 22 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. She also had two assists and three steals.
Madison Adams had nine points and three assists, while
Rachael DiRegolo had eight points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Dominique Dotson led four Broncos in double figures with 17 points.
Cal State LA shot just 31.3 percent (21-of-67) and made only 5-of-24 from 3-point range (20.8 percent). Cal Poly Pomona shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) and made 5-of-15 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles had a 42-38 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 13 for the Broncos.
The Golden Eagles never led, but stayed within striking distance despite falling behind early. Cal State LA trailed by as many as seven points in the first quarter, but got a pair of free throws by
Rachael DiRegolo and back-to-back layups from Uzowuru to close to within 15-14 after one quarter.
The Golden Eagles pulled into a 25-25 tie after a layup by
Mackenzie Barnes and a 3-pointer by Adams, but the Broncos took a 35-27 lead at halftime. Cal State LA trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before closing to within eight points at 45-37 after a basket by
Rachael DiRegolo and a 3-pointer by Adams. Cal Poly Pomona went on another run to take a 15-point lead, but three free throws by
Jo Ana Adams made it 54-42 heading into the final quarter.
The Golden Eagles got to within 56-45 after a 3-pointer by
Christine Delapina with 9:12 to go, but never could get closer than that. Cal Poly Pomona called a curious timeout with 1:09 left leading by 13 and then hit free throws down the stretch to increase the final margin.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1 p.m, Â
