LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team has thrived this season with amazing second-half comebacks, but the Golden Eagles saw the tables get turned on them Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 49-33 lead early in the second half, only to see the Broncos regroup and turn things around in an 80-69 decision in University Gym. Cal State LA (10-8, 6-6 CCAA) held a 44-33 lead at halftime and extended the lead to 16 points by scoring the next five points of the second half. Cal Poly Pomona (8-5, 6-5 CCAA) exploded with an 18-2 run to tie it at 51-51 and, after the Golden Eagles reclaimed a 56-51 lead, embarked on a 15-0 run to take a 66-56 lead.
Cal State LA never got closer than seven points after that.
Fard Muhammad led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, nine of them coming via 3-pointers.
Jihad Woods had 14 points and six rebounds and
Ja'Sean Lewis had 10 points and seven assists while going 4-for-4 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range.
William Christmas had 25 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven turnovers for the Broncos, while Chris Sullivan had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Devin Means and
Shacquille Dawkins had eight points each for the Golden Eagles, while
Anthony Fitzpatrick had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Golden Eagles were outstanding in the first half, shooting 46.4 percent overall and a sizzling 63.6 percent (7-of-11) to take an 11-point lead. The Golden Eagles, though, cooled off in the second half, shooting just 34.8 percent overall and knocking down only 3-of-11 from 3-point range as Cal Poly Pomona turned up its defensive pressure. Turnovers were also a problem in the second period for the Golden Eagles, although both teams finished with 18 in the game.
Cal State LA shot 41.2 percent for the game (21-of-51) and hit 10-of-22 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona shot 54.4 percent (31-of-57) overall, including 60 percent in the second half (18-of-30). Cal State LA was 17-of-25 from the free-throw line, while Cal Poly Pomona was 14-of-20.
The Golden Eagles, coming off a poor offensive showing on Thursday, had a much better showing on Saturday and used an 11-0 run to open up a 26-17 lead following a pair of free throws by
Jordan Rogers. A 3-pointer by Muhammad gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 41-31 and three free throws by Muhammad late in the first half gave them a 44-33 halftime lead.
Woods opened the second half with an offensive rebound and basket and a 3-pointer by Rogers gave the Golden Eagles a 49-33 lead with 18:56 to go. After Cal Poly Pomona rallied to tie it, a 3-pointer by Lewis and a dunk by Woods gave the Golden Eagles a 56-51 lead with 12:43 to go.
Cal State LA, though, was unable to come back from the Broncos' ensuing 10-0 run and dropped their second straight contest since last Saturday's epic comeback win against Chico State.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
