CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a tough night offensively in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Chico State.
The Golden Eagles shot just 26.4 percent and fell to the Wildcats, 59-47, Saturday night in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (6-8, 3-7 CCAA) dropped its fifth straight game and its second straight on its Northern California road trip.
Alyssa Fisher scored 11 points and had three steals, while
Madison Adams also had 11 points.
Mackenzie Barnes had 10 points and six rebounds.
Madison Wong led a balanced attack for Chico State (9-4, 6-4 CCAA) with 10 points.
Chiderah Uzowuru had six points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Rachael DiRegolo had seven points and 12 rebounds.
Cal State LA was just 17-of-64 (26.4 percent) from the floor and 5-of-23 from 3-point range (21.7 percent). Chico State was 18-of-59 (30.5 percent) overall and 8-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 8-of-14 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats were 15-of-21.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 49-45 and both teams committed 16 turnovers.
The Golden Eagles started well and jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead following a 3-pointer by Barnes and a layup by DiRegolo. A jumper by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 12-7, with 3:26 remaining in the first period. Chico State, though, closed the quarter with a 9-2 run to take a 16-14 advantage after one period.
Cal State LA took its last lead, 19-18, after a 3-pointer by
Madison Adams and a layup by Barnes tied the game a 21-21, but the Wildcats scored the final nine points of the second quarter to take a 30-21 halftime lead.
Chico State opened up a quick 15-point lead early in the third quarter, but five straight points by Adams sliced the deficit to 40-30. The Wildcats boosted the lead back to 15 points before a basket by
Jo Ana Adams made it 45-32 entering the fourth period.
A 3-pointer by Fisher sliced the gap to 51-42 and a basket by Barnes made it 51-44 with 2:34 to go, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get. A free throw by Uzowuru kept the margin at seven points, 54-47, with 58 seconds left, but the Wildcats hit their free throws down the stretch to increase the final margin.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
