LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2018 season, coming out on the short end of a defensive battle with Dixie State.
The Golden Eagles surrendered their first goal of the season in the first half and the Trailblazers made it stand up for a 1-0 victory. Cal State LA (2-1) was 2-0 entering the match with wins over PacWest Conference teams, while Dixie State (3-0), which moved from the PacWest to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this year, remained unbeaten against California Collegiate Athletic Association competition.
Dixie State had a 9-7 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State LA goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado made six saves, including a spectacular stop in the second half on a point-blank effort that kept the game at 1-0. Dixie State played two goalkeepers in the shutout. Nicole Rahman didn't record a save in the first half, although she did aggressively bat a couple of dangerous crosses out of harm's way and Felicity Tarr made two saves while playing the second half.
The only goal of the game came in the 17th minute when Dixie State's Whitley Johns scored her third of the season. She was sent in alone after a nice pass from Taylor Claiborne down the left side. Johns dribbled into the box and directed a shot inside the near post. A Cal State LA defender came sliding in late in attempt to keep the ball out of the net, but was unable to do so.
Cal State LA had two outstanding chances, one in each half.
Ashtyn Bracamonte was on the receiving end of a touch pass from
Leslie Ramirez in the box, but shot the bouncing ball just wide of the net.
Paulina Chaidez started the play by eluding the Dixie State defense and centering it to Ramirez.
The second big chance came in the second half when Ramirez was able to come up with the ball from close range, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar and out of play.
Maldonado had the save of the match when she denied Johns on a breakaway down the right side. Maldonado came out to cut down the angle and blocked the shot with her chest from point-blank range.
Cal State LA had a final close call with about seven minutes left, but couldn't control a loose ball in front of the Dixie State goal.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Fresno Pacific.
