No. 16 Golden Eagles Fall Short To No. 2 Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team saw its season-opening win streak come to a halt Friday night against a formidable foe.

The No. 16 Golden Eagles never could get untracked and were swept by No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino, 25-16, 25-19, 26-24 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association showdown in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-1, 5-1 CCAA) lost for the first time after 13 wins in its best start to a season since 2000. Cal State San Bernardino (15-1, 8-0 CCAA) remained unbeaten in conference play and took the lead in the South Division.

Daisia LaBrie had a team-high nine kills and hit at a .412 percentage for the Golden Eagles, while Karla Santos had eight kills and 12 digs.

Alexis Cardoza had 13 kills and four blocks, while Hailey Jackson had nine kills and hit at a .571 percentage for the Coyotes.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 40-38 edge in kills and hit at a .280 clip to .175 for the Golden Eagles. The Coyotes also had an 8-3 advantage in blocks and four service aces to three for the Golden Eagles.

Kelsey Molnar had 26 set assists and Jeshmarie Suarez had 12 digs.

The Golden Eagles scored the first two points of the match on a kill by Daisy Portillo and an attack error, but the Coyotes scored the next three points and never looked back. The Coyotes opened up a 20-11 advantage and cruised to the opening-set win.

The Golden Eagles also opened the second set by scoring the first two points on a kill by Daisy Crenshaw and a block by Crenshaw, but the Coyotes quickly reversed things and roared to a 18-10 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back and got to within 19-15 after a block by Alejandra Negron and LaBrie, but couldn't get any closer. A block by Crenshaw and Portillo brought the Golden Eagles to within 23-19, but the Coyotes got the final two points to close it out.

Cal State LA finally got some rhythm in the third set and opened up a 20-13 lead after kills by LaBrie and Negron. Cal State San Bernardino, though, scored 10 of the next 13 points to even the set at 23-23. A kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a set point at 24-23, but the Coyotes scored the final three points to win the match.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona.
