LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team kept the good times rolling with another thrilling five-set victory on Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles saw a 2-0 lead evaporate in UC San Diego's RIMAC Arena before regrouping to win in five sets, 25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 20-25, 15-9 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State LA (13-0, 5-0 CCAA), ranked 16th in the nation, improved to 4-0 in five-set decisions and once again showed an impressive resolve when things got tough.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to large leads in the first two sets, only to see UC San Diego battle back to win the next two frames and send the match to a deciding fifth set. Cal State LA trailed early in the final set, the last time at 5-4, and steadily pulled away to wrap up a big road win.
Karla Santos had a match-high 26 kills, 13 digs and four service aces to lead a potent Cal State LA attack.
Mickayla Sherman had 15 kills, 15 digs and three aces and
Daisy Crenshaw had 10 kills and one block.
Gina Cortes had 11 kills to lead UC San Diego (5-7, 1-5 CCAA).
Kelsey Molnar had 60 set assists and four aces, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 27 digs.
Daisia LaBrie added eight kills, while
Daisy Portillo had seven kills.
Cal State LA had a 68-47 edge in kills and hit at a .195 percentage to .186 for the Tritons. UC San Diego had a 9-3 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles had 11 service aces and 17 errors, while UC San Diego had no aces and four errors.
The Golden Eagles were ready at the start and roared to an early 8-1 lead. An ace by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a 17-11 lead and UC San Diego was unable to get closer than four points the rest of the set. A kill by Crenshaw made it 23-18, an attack error made it 24-19 and a kill by Sherman ended the set.
The second set played out in similar fashion. Cal State LA opened up a 15-10 lead only to see UC San Diego climb back to within 19-17. A kill and an ace by Sherman boosted the lead to 21-17, an attack error made it 22-17 and a kill by Santos boosted the edge to 23-17. A kill by Molnar got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and a kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
UC San Diego, though, evened things up over the next two sets. The Golden Eagles rallied from an 8-2 deficit in the third set to tie it at 15-15, but a service error gave the Tritons the lead and they never looked back. Cal State LA rallied from a deficit in the fourth set and tied it at 16-16, but another service error gave the Tritons the lead and they eventually sent the match to a fifth set.
The Golden Eagles trailed 5-4, but a UC San Diego service error, back-to-back kills by Santos and an ace by Sherman gave the Golden Eagles an 8-5 lead. UC San Diego cut the deficit to one point at 9-8, but kills by Crenshaw and Santos and an ace by Molnar made it 12-8 and the Golden Eagles never looked back. After the Tritons made it 12-9, kills by Santos, Crenshaw and Sherman ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a big home match against No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino.
