LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team put forth an outstanding effort on Sunday, but Sonoma State earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association victory with a late tally.
The Golden Eagles played an inspired match, but had only a narrow and frustrating defeat to show for it. Sonoma State got a goal in the 83rd minute from Kathryn Haiber when her hard shot inside the box deflected off a Cal State LA defender in a crowd and inside the far post for the only score of the game.
It was a tough decision for Cal State LA (4-3-1, 1-2-1 CCAA), which was blanked in both games this weekend. The Golden Eagles battled the Seawolves (5-0-3, 3-0-1 CCAA) on even terms until the end before the visitors finally broke through.
Adriana Maldonado had another outstanding game in goal for Cal State LA. She made nine saves, including a diving stop of a bid by Sam Layman with about 25 minutes to play. Sonoma State goalkeeper Kristen Spear had six saves, including a diving stop of a strong shot by Cal State LA's
Irma Pinzon toward the far post on a 2-on-1 in the first half.
Both teams thought they had scoring opportunities waved off by an offsides flag in the opening half. Cal State LA's
Paulina Chaidez looked to be on a clear break before the whistle blew and several minutes later, Sonoma State thought it had a goal from Layman that was erased by an offsides call.
Sonoma State ended up with an 18-12 advantage in shots and an 11-5 edge in the second half. The Seawolves also had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks with all three coming in the second half.
Cal State LA's best chance in the second half came from Pinzon, who made a strong run into the Sonoma State box and, with Spear out of her crease, sent a cross into the middle where it just missed connecting. Prior to their goal, the Seawolves had a shot by Miranda Sanchez hit the crossbar in the 62nd minute.
Chaidez had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Ashtyn Bracamonte,
Kimberly Mendez and Pinzon had two shots each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.
