No. 17 Golden Eagles Battle To Remain Unbeaten

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team remained unbeaten after another hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first set to Cal State Monterey Bay, but bounced back to record a 24-26, 25-18, 25-14, 25-22 win in their home opener in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-0, 4-0 CCAA) surpassed the 11-0 start by the 2005 squad with the victory. Cal State LA's 2005 team shared a conference championship with Cal Poly Pomona, won the West Region championship and advanced to the national semi-finals.

The program record for most wins to start a season is a big one -- the 2000 squad went 30-0 before losing in the NCAA playoffs.

Cal State LA got a match-high 18 kills,18 digs and four service aces from Karla Santos and 14 kills and three blocks from Mickayla Sherman. Daisia LaBrie had 11 kills and three blocks.

Anela Visesio had nine kills and three blocks to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (6-6, 1-4 CCAA).

Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills and two blocks and Daisy Portillo had seven kills and two service aces.

Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 30 digs, while Kelsey Molnar had 46 set assists and five digs.

Cal State LA had a 60-28 advantage in kills and hit at a .200 percentage to .039 for the Otters. Cal State Monterey Bay had a 10-8 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA had nine aces and 13 serving errors, while Cal State Monterey Bay had four aces and four errors.

The Golden Eagles dropped a tight opening set despite having a set point at 24-23 following a kill by Santos. The Otters, though, saved the set point on a kill by Baylie Pierson and then won the frame after two straight Cal State LA attack errors.

Santos had three straight service aces to stake the Golden Eagles to a quick 6-1 lead in the second set. Three kills by LaBrie and a pair of attack errors put the Golden Eagles ahead, 19-13, and a kill by Portillo ultimately ended the set and evened the match.

Cal State LA opened up a quick 10-5 lead in the third set and got back-to-back kills by Sherman to open up a 21-12 advantage. A service ace by Caitlyn Bato and a kill by Santos ended the set.

Cal State LA had to battle to end the match in four sets. The Golden Eagles trailed, 14-11, before rolling off five straight points to take a 16-14 lead. The set was tied for a final time at 18-18 before a kill by Molnar, a kill by Santos, an attack error and a block by LaBrie gave the Golden Eagles a 22-18 lead. The Otters got as close as 23-22, but two straight kills by Santos ended the match.

Cal State LA will return to action with a road match at UC San Diego on Tuesday.
