LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team made its 2018 home opener a successful one.
The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from
Paulina Chaidez and made it stand up for a hard-fought 1-0 win over Biola. Cal State LA (2-0) has recorded shutout wins in its first two games.
Adriana Maldonado made a pair of saves for her program-record 23rd career shutout and she got a big assist from midfielder
Irma Pinzon, who made a lead-preserving save off the line early in the second to keep Biola off the board.
Cal State LA had a 16-10 edge in shots and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Pinzon had a part in two of the biggest plays of the game, one in each half. First, she made a strong run down the right flank in the box to set up the only goal of the game. Pinzon centered nicely to an onrushing
Madison Mader, who sent a hard shot that Biola goalkeeper Viviana Poli made a terrific save to keep out of the net. Chaidez, though, alertly pounced on the rebound and fired a shot inside the near post for the lone goal of the game. It was her first goal of the season and already the 11th in her Cal State LA career. Mader, who had one of the Golden Eagles' goals in the 2-0 win over Azusa Pacific on Thursday, now has a goal and an assist in her first two games with Cal State LA.
After a relatively calm first half, action picked up in the second. Biola very nearly got the equalizer in the opening minutes of the second half when Colie Martin got to a loose ball in the box and sent a shot toward the net that seemed destined to tie the game. Pinzon, though, was able to deflect the ball away just before it crossed the goal-line to keep the score at 1-0.
Cal State LA then had a glorious chance later in the half after a corner kick by
Kimberly Mendez.
Paulina Senices was able to emerge from a scrum and got a shot toward the net, but Poli was able to scramble back and dive on the ball before it went in.
Mendez had a good opportunity later in the half with a hard shot in the box, but it went just wide of the goal.
Cal State LA will return to action on Monday with a home game at noon against Dixie State.
