Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Start Season With A Historic Result

AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team opened its 2018 season with a bit of history thanks to another outstanding defensive effort.

The Golden Eagles got a goal in each half and went on to a 2-0 victory over Azusa Pacific Thursday. The shutout for senior goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado was the 22nd of her brilliant Cal State LA career, which sets a new program record. She entered the season tied for the program lead with Reyna Coca at 21 and needed only three saves - all in the second half - to achieve the record-breaker.

Cal State LA got goals from Madison Mader and Irma Pinzon and used a stout defensive effort to thwart the Cougars. The Golden Eagles didn't allow a single shot in the first half while taking the lead and ended up with a 7-5 advantage in shots for the game. The Golden Eagles also had the only two corner kicks of the game.

Mader opened the scoring in the 13th minute after a steal in the midfield and a shot into the net from the top of the box.

Paulina Chaidez, last year's California Collegiate Athletic Association's Most Valuable Offensive Player, had a good bid to make it 2-0 in the 16th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0.

Pinzon made it 2-0 in the 55th minute after a nice corner kick by Leslie Ramirez. Pinzon got to the ball after an initial touch and knocked it into the net for the third goal of her young Cal State LA career. She had a pair of goals in a win over Cal State Monterey Bay last season as a freshman.

Cal State LA will play its home opener on Saturday with a 6 p.m. game against Biola.
