Golden Eagles Get Their Kicks In Season Opener

NAMPA, IDAHO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team got its 2018 season off to an impressive start with a big road victory over a quality opponent.

The Golden Eagles got a goal in each half and played a suffocating defensive game in a 2-0 win over Northwest Nazarene of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at NNU Field. Cal State LA (1-0) got a goal from Eddie Leon in the sixth minute and from newcomer Leonardo Nogueira in the 78th minute.

The Golden Eagles had a 15-4 edge in shots, including an 8-1 advantage in the second half. Alexander Brems, another talented newcomer for the Golden Eagles, made one save for the shutout.

Both goals were scored from inside the box with strong work from Morten Bjoershol leading to both scores. For Leon, it was his first career goal and staked the Golden Eagles to the early lead. For Nogueira, it was a dazzling debut for Cal State LA after coming over from Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he was an All-California Collegiate Athletic Association and All-West Region honoree.

Tim Klefisch was flying all over the field from his midfield position and the backline of Bjoershol, Jesper Evensen, Jose Orellana and Antonio Rosas was strong throughout. Northwest Nazarene had nine corner kicks in the opening half, but Cal State LA denied each opportunity.

Cal State LA improved to 2-0 all-time against Northwest Nazarene.
