LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer head coach
Chris Chamides has named a key addition to his coaching staff.
Â
Michael Erush, the former associate head coach at Loyola Marymount, has joined the Golden Eagles, Chamides announced on Tuesday. Erush was a former four-time all-West Coast Conference player and an All-American at Loyola Marymount and later served as an assistant coach at his alma mater for 11 years.
Â
Erush replaces Michael Jacobson, who became the head coach at El Camino College earlier this year.
Â
"We are pleased to welcome
Michael Erush to our staff. He reached the professional level as a player and as the associate head coach at LMU he made great contributions to their program," Chamides said. "We expect his strong background as a player and coach will be an asset to our student-athletes, our staff, and our campus community. Like everyone here, he will work hard to help us fight for more championships and develop our men off the field. We'll get right to work and I look forward to it.
Â
Erush had an outstanding playing career at Loyola Marymount and was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons. The Lions advanced to the NCAA playoffs in each of his last three seasons and earned a first-round bye and national seeding in 2003. He earned All-WCC honors all four years in college, including a first-team award in 2003.
Â
He later became only the third LMU player to join the MLS as he played for the Colorado Rapids and Chivas USA. He spent the majority of 2006 with Miami FC of the USL's First Division, where he played alongside Brazilian legend Romario. He also had international playing experience in Israel, Hungary and Moldova.
Â
Erush began his coaching career at Loyola Marymount in 2007 and was promoted to associate head coach in February of 2014. While at LMU, he helped organize and coordinate recruits, mentored the backline and handled video editing, opponent scouting and scheduling.
Â
He also has served as the Head Coach for the Maccabi Pan AM games in Chile in 2015 and for the World Maccabi Games in Israel in 2017.
Â
Cal State LA, which added to its rich soccer history in 2017 by winning the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with an incredible run as the No. 5 seed, will open its 2018 season on Aug. 30 at Northwest Nazarene. Cal State LA's home opener will be on Thursday, Sept. 6 against Simon Fraser at 1 p.m.
