IRVINE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had its chances in a non-conference matchup with Concordia Saturday night, but a big second-half run by the home team spelled trouble for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles held a 40-38 lead with 13 minutes left, but were outscored 16-3 over the next several minutes and fell to the Eagles of the Pacific West Conference, 81-69. The game was tied 25-25 at halftime, but the Golden Eagles were outscored, 56-44, in the second half.
Cal State LA (12-14) had its three-game winning streak snapped by Concordia (17-9).
Jalyn Pennie was outstanding once again with a powerful 20-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Garrett Carter had 15 points, six rebounds and three assists and
Devin Means had 11 points.
JT Roach had 17 points to lead five Concordia players in double figures.
Khalil Williams had eight points for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot just 38.8 percent (26-of-67) and was 5-of-18 from 3-point range. Concordia shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63) and was 6-of-18 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was just 12-of-23 from the free-throw line, while Concordia was 19-of-31. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 49-40, and both teams committed 18 turnovers.
After a 25-25 halftime tie, the Golden Eagles scored the opening basket of the second half to take a 27-25 lead. Cal State LA then used a 9-0 run to erase a 36-29 deficit to take a two-point lead.
Jihad Woods started the spurt with a three-point play and a layup by Williams made it 36-34. Pennie then hit consecutive baskets to make it 38-36. A pair of free throws by Carter gave the Golden Eagles their final lead of the game, 40-38.
Concordia responded with its game-turning 16-3 run and then kept the Golden Eagles at bay the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will turn its sights back to California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Golden Eagles will return to action on Thursday at Cal State San Marcos and need a win to stay in the chase for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
