SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team came out on the short end of an unusually wild California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Cal State San Marcos.
In a game that included three penalty kick and 33 fouls, the Golden Eagles fell to the Cougars, 3-2, in The Cage. Cal State LA (8-5-2, 4-4-2 CCAA) remains in sixth place in the CCAA, while Cal State San Marcos (7-5-3, 6-2-2 CCAA) pulled into a tie for fourth with San Francisco State pending the Gators' game later Sunday with Chico State.
The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Leslie Ramirez scored both Cal State LA goals, one that gave the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead and the other that tied the game at 2-2 in the second half. The Cougars scored their first two goals via penalty kicks - one in each half - and then got the game-winner off a corner kick in the 80th minute.
Ramirez had an outstanding game for the Golden Eagles and finished with a match-high eight shots.
Yaqualin Garcia had two shots, while
Paulina Chaidez and
Adyson Willett each had a shot.
Cal State LA had a 12-6 advantage in shots and probably deserved a better fate.
Adriana Maldonado made two saves and the three goals allowed came courtesy of two penalty kicks and a header off a corner kick from right in front of the goal. Both teams had six corner kicks.
Ramirez opened the scoring in the third minute when she knocked in a free kick from just outside the box. It was her third goal of the season.
Amy Wilson tied it for the Cougars with a penalty kick in the 30th minute and Jessica Moreno gave them the lead with a penalty kick goal in the 56th minute.
Ramirez tied it in the 70th minute on yet another penalty kick, although this one was for the Golden Eagles. Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper Yesenia Betancourt made the initial save, but Ramirez alertly got to the rebound first and knocked it in for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
The Cougars got the eventual game-winner 10 minutes later when Lauren Perry headed in a corner kick from Moreno.
Cal State LA had only two shot attempts after falling behind. A bid by Willett in the 83rd minute went wide and a shot by Ramirez in the final minute went wide.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 4:30 p.m.
